What are the possible side effects of cefixime?
Your child may have some of these side effects while they take cefixime. Usually your child will not need to see the doctor about them. These side effects may go away as your child's body gets used to cefixime.
Check with your child's doctor if your child has any of these signs or symptoms and they do not go away or they bother your child:
- watery bowel movements (diarrhea)
- mild stomach cramps
- an upset stomach, throwing up
- a sore mouth or tongue
- an itch in the vagina or liquid draining from the vagina
Most of the following side effects are not common, but they may be a sign of a serious problem. Call your child's doctor right away or take your child to the Emergency Department if your child has any of these side effects:
- a new fever or a fever that does not get better
- cramps or severe pain in or around the stomach
- severe watery bowel movements that have blood in them
- a rash, itchy skin, swelling, or hives (raised, red, itchy areas on the skin)
- blistering, peeling skin
- problems breathing
- dizziness
- seizures (fits)
- pain in the joints such as the knees, shoulders, or knuckles
- peeing, or urinating, less often
- no appetite
- yellow eyes or skin
- unusual tiredness or weakness
Also, call your doctor if your child does not get any better within 2 days or your child is getting worse.
