Very premature babies are at risk for metabolic bone disease, a condition that affects their bone health and increases the risk of fractures.

Key points

  • Premature infants are at risk for osteopenia (a decrease in bone density and bone strength) and rickets (softening or weakening of the bones). The condition is called metabolic bone disease of prematurity.
  • The risk of osteopenia and rickets in premature babies depends on the gestational age and birth weight.
  • Metabolic bone disease of prematurity can increase the risk of fracture in the first year of life in very premature babies.
  • Optimizing bone health and preventing metabolic bone disease of prematurity may include monitoring with blood work, nutritional fortification and vitamin and mineral supplementation.
