Learn what to expect when you visit your child in the Post-Anesthetic Care Unit (PACU), sometimes called recovery.

Key points

  • The operating room (OR) team will bring your child to PACU where they will wake up from the anesthetic and the team will let you know when you can visit them.
  • Only one caregiver is allowed in the PACU.
  • Please make sure to have something to eat and drink before visiting your child so you can look after them safely.  
  • Your child's health-care provider will come speak to you after the surgery. 
  • Your child’s health-care provider will support you in providing comfort to your child after surgery.  
  • Before discharge, your health-care provider will talk to you about your child's medication, how to care for your child at home and offer your child a clear liquid before leaving.
