  • Heart conditions can be congenital (present at birth) or acquired over time. They can be chronic (long-lasting) or acute (happen suddenly and end quickly).
  • Babies with a heart condition may have a fast heartbeat, fast breathing, poor weight gain, or blue lips or skin while other babies may only have a murmur.
  • Children with edema (swelling), palpitations, difficulty breathing or fainting should be evaluated by a health-care provider.
