Discover the signs and symptoms of fainting, what causes it and how to help your child if they have fainted.

Key points

  • Fainting is a sudden and temporary loss of consciousness with a rapid return to normal.
  • Your child may feel dizzy, nauseous, hot or cold right before they faint. Their face may also go pale.
  • The most common cause of fainting is a drop in blood pressure. Other, more serious, causes include an underlying heart condition, anemia, low blood sugar or a seizure.
  • See your child's health-care provider if your child has had repeated fainting episodes or if fainting is accompanied by incontinence or occurs with exercise. Call 911 if your child has stopped breathing or remains confused after fainting.
