Vomiting is the forceful emptying of the stomach's contents.

Key points

  • Vomiting is often caused by irritation of the stomach and digestive system from a viral infection known as gastroenteritis (stomach virus).
  • Vomiting can also be a symptom of many other conditions.
  • Take your child to a health-care provider if you are worried your child is dehydrated or if the vomiting is not caused by gastroenteritis.
  • If your child is vomiting, give them small amounts of clear fluids often to prevent dehydration. Breastfed babies can continue to drink breast milk.
