An overview of seizures and epilepsy, with information about treatment options.

Key points

  • A seizure is caused by an electrical disturbance in the brain. Seizures look different in different people.
  • If a child has two or more seizures that have not been provoked by a reversible cause, such as a fever, they are diagnosed with epilepsy. They may also be diagnosed with epilepsy if they have only one unprovoked seizure with an underlying condition that carries a high risk of a second seizure.
  • Most children's seizures can be controlled with medication.
  • Other treatment options include surgery, a special diet or a medical device.
  • Children with epilepsy can also have problems with learning and behaviour.
