A supracondylar humerus fracture is a fracture just above the elbow. Learn how to help your child recover and when to see a doctor.

Key points

  • After an elbow fracture, your child will need to wear a backslab to help heal their broken arm and a sling for comfort.
  • Pain and swelling are common in the first 24 to 48 hours after injury. Monitor any changes to the colour and temperature of your child’s skin and any stiffness or numbness in the hands and fingers.
  • Remove the backslab at home after three weeks, as shown by your child’s doctor.
  • Make sure your child avoids high-risk activities for 12 weeks after their injury.
  • Your child's elbow may need a year to fully recover strength and movement.
