Cells in the mouth can be affected by chemotherapy and radiation to the head and neck area. Learn how to help your child avoid infection with good mouth care.

Key points

  • If your child is receiving chemotherapy or radiation, good mouth care is important to prevent infection.
  • Your child will need to see a dentist before or shortly after starting treatment.
  • Your child should brush their teeth and tongue two or three times each day with a regular soft toothbrush and toothpaste. Young children will need a parent or caregiver to help with brushing.
  • If your child's gums bleed or their mouth is too sore for regular brushing, use a baking soda mouthwash instead.
