Sterile gloving procedure

Before you begin an antiseptic or sterile procedure, you will need to put on sterile gloves. It is important that you follow the instructions for putting on the gloves very carefully. Touching the outside of the gloves with your bare hands will contaminate the gloves and they will no longer be sterile.

Supplies needed

• Alcohol solution
• Antiseptic wipes
• Mask
• Soap and water
• One package of sterile gloves

Clean your work surface

Clean your work surface with alcohol and allow to dry completely.

Put on your mask before washing your hands.

Handwashing

Before putting on the sterile gloves, you will need to properly wash your hands. Handwashing removes germs from your hands and will keep the supplies clean.

Sterile gloving procedure

Once you have washed your hands, you are ready to put on the sterile gloves. Watch this video to learn the proper way to put on sterile gloves without contaminating them.

Remember:

• Make sure the sterile glove packaging does not have any openings or tears.
• Make sure you have enough room on your work surface to open the package.
• Touching the inside of the packaging may contaminate the gloves as you move them around to put them on.
• Move the glove away from the package, so you do not contaminate it by touching the edge of the package.
• If you are left-handed, you may want to put on the right glove first.
• Make sure the sterile outside of one glove only touches the sterile outside of the other glove.
• Make sure that you order the correct size of gloves. If they are too small, it will be difficult to put them on. If they are too large, it will be difficult to keep the gloves sterile during the procedure.
• Throw your gloves out at the end of the procedure. Do NOT reuse them.
• The inner packaging should not be touched or moved until after the procedure to avoid contamination.
