Key points

  • Tachycardia is a fast heart rate.
  • There are many different types of tachycardia. Exercise, crying, illness, pain and fever can all lead to a fast heart rate.
  • Other causes of tachycardia are due to a problem with the heart's electrical system that affects the rhythm of the heart. This is called a tachyarrhythmia (a type of abnormal fast heart rate).
  • During an episode of tachycardia caused by an arrythmia, your child may feel dizzy, weak or uncomfortable, and the heart may beat more than 160 times per minute.
  • Treatment depends on what is causing the tachycardia.
