Learn how to check the volume of water in the balloon of a feeding tube as well as adjust the fit of the balloon tube.

Key points

  • The balloon at the end of the feeding tube helps to keep the tube in place and prevents it from being accidentally pulled out.
  • Check the volume of water in the balloon at least once per week.
  • If the balloon is broken, there is a risk of it accidentally being pulled out. Tape the tube to your child’s abdomen until the tube can be replaced.
  • Filling the balloon with more or less water will affect the fit of the tube against your child’s abdomen.
